AOL FTP Help:

Here are some easy steps to take for using the AOL FTP client to upload your work to the Secret Pens. It looks like a lot, but will be very visually obvious and will seem quick once you've done it once or twice.

1) While logged into AOL, go to keyword: FTP

2) A window will pop up entitled "FTP - File Transfer Protocol". On the right there is a big square button with two rainbow-colored arrows, that says "Go to FTP". Click that.

3) A new window will appear, entitled "Anonymous FTP". There will be a list of FTP servers and also three blue buttons. Click on the middle blue button, which says "Other Site".

4) A window will appear, entitled "Other Site". There will be a small text box titled "Site Address:". This is where you type in garlen.roguechannel.com. Don't add "http://" beforehand.

5) Also you will see a small checkbox underneath, labelled "Ask for login name and password". Check that.

6) When you've entered the server name and checked the box, hit the blue button labelled "Connect".

7) A small window will pop up. It is erroneously labelled "Anonymous FTP". There are two text boxes asking for your username and password. Type them in exactly as I gave them to you (they're case-sensitive). Then hit the blue button labelled "Continue".

8) Now if all has gone well, you will see a big window titled "garlen.roguechannel.com .../secretpens/yourusername". There will be a large file box with only 2 "files" in it (ignore those). There is also a row of graphic buttons underneath the file box.

9) Click the one in the middle that says "Upload". It has a picture of blue floppy disks.

10) A new window will appear. It is titled "garlen.roguechannel.com". There will be a text box that says "Remote File Name". This is where you enter the name that you want your file to have on the other end. This doesn't necessarily have to be the same as what it was named on your hard drive. Type in a name (for example, mystory.html)

11) Below that are two radio buttons, asking you to choose between ASCII or Binary format. Choose ASCII if you are uploading an .html file, or Binary if it is a .jpg or .gif. When finished, click the blue "Continue" button.

12) Now you'll see a small window titled "Upload File". It has a blank window for "File" and two buttons labelled "Send" and "Select File". This is where you need to enter the file's path and filename on your hard drive. Click the "Select File" button to browse and pick the file. Then, click on "Send" to send it on its way. (You'll see a blue progress indicator letting you know how the upload is progressing)

13) When finished, it says "File transfer complete". (Click OK)

14) Repeat steps 10-13 until you are finished uploading all your files. If you walk away from the computer for a while, it might time out and you might have to reconnect to garlen again.

15) Close all of the windows when you are finished.

16) Check your files by accessing it with a web browser. They should be at http://www.secretpens.org/yourusername/yourfilename (insert whatever file name you chose).
